Massachusetts Operating Engineers License

Massachusetts Department of Public Safety
Engineering Section, Division of Inspection

Local residency is not required to apply for the license.

Licenses from other jurisdictions are recognized for experience.

Continuing education is now required to maintain licenses every year.

The State of Massachusetts has 6 licensing levels:

  1. Massachusetts 1st Class Engineer
  2. Massachusetts 2nd Class Engineer
  3. Massachusetts 3rd Class Engineer
  4. Massachusetts Special to Operate
  5. Massachusetts 2nd Class Fireman
  6. Massachusetts 1st Class Fireman
  7. Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician
  8. Massachusetts Refrigeration Apprentice
